When I was in kindergarten I saw a painting of the American Revolutionary War. I asked my mom, “Who were the good guys and who were the bad guys?” And she said, “That’s not really how war works. It’s not like a TV show. Both sides thought they were right, otherwise they wouldn’t have been fighting.” And my seven year old ass went “Oh ok”
Anyway having internalized that fun fact in literally kindergarten? It surprises me how many college-educated adults still don’t seem to know about it.
OP your mum is correct but also you realise this was literally about the American Civil War where there very much was a good guys and bad guys side?
Like I appreciate the sentiment but it’s one of the few wars where you can very easily pick the side that was validated by history.
Seein’ too many Twitter refugees asking if they’ll get in trouble for saying “kill yourself” to people and while no, you’re not gonna get nuked from orbit, that is maybe something you just shouldn’t be doing in general perhaps?? Maybe telling people to kill themselves is bad actually?? Some of y’all are wild, why is the first thing you can think to ask on a new platform if you can send one of the worst kinds of harassment to people?? Grow tf up and learn how to use the block button. It’ll do wonders for your mood, trust me.
“It’s a joke!”
People in the notes desperately trying to come up with a group subhuman enough to warrant suicide baiting: I don’t trust you.
You’re told “this is a cruel and evil thing to do” and your first instinct is “okay but what if I find an acceptable target”, and that tells me everything I need to know about you as a person, which is I don’t want you anywhere near me.
The problem with dehumanizing others is not that you chose the wrong target, it’s the fact you’re ghoulish enough to do it in the first place. Congratulations, you’re actively part of the reason we’re having a human rights crisis world-wide right now: assholes like you keep thinking if they find the right target demographic, they get to unperson people.
hiking trails on the west coast: Begin climbing on a soft earthen trail through beautiful douglas fir-western hemlock forest for 2.5 miles along a series of switchbacks, then break from the tree cover for 1 mile of straight even trail through a stunning wildflower meadow just below the ridgeline, after which the trail makes a sharp right and continues to the summit with a further 2 miles of switchbacks. Enjoy beautiful views of the nearest dormant stratovolcano and also at least two waterfalls and a crystal-clear alpine lake along the way. Round trip: 11 miles, 3,000ft elevation gain. Difficulty: moderate 🙂
hiking trails on the east coast: Go 1.5 miles up. Yes, straight up. Switchbacks? What are you, a baby? Are you a little child? Fuck you. Go up. [Seasonal note: first half of trail is a running stream during mud season and a multipitch ice climbing route during winter.] Round trip: 3 miles, 1,200ft elevation gain. Difficulty: jesus christ
I am starting to. Understand. why some people have such an apparently unhinged viewpoint of how many miles a hike is. I read folks talking about 8-12 mile hikes and I was legitimately like “How the hell do you even FIND people physically fit enough to do that with you? How do y’all have the time to train for that?”
But apparently y’all have been normal the whole time and some places have a version of hiking that is more like walking, and doesn’t have any crawling on all fours or climbing over boulders or 45 degree inclines or partially broken ladders. Appalachia just wants to Harm You.
In my opinions, it’s not the net elevation gain that gets you, it’s the number of times the trail descends downwards and then goes up again to regain the elevation.
Prosecutors argued that Mangione was carrying about $10,000 in cash and that his bag was a Faraday bag that blocks cellphone signals—all proof that he was a sophisticated criminal who should be held without bail.
“‘I’d like to correct two things,’” Mangione said after the prosecutor finished speaking, according to CNN’s Danny Freeman, “‘I don’t know where any of that money came from—I’m not sure if it was planted. And also, that bag was waterproof, so I don’t know about criminal sophistication.’”
this is what i’ve been trying to say. yes the memes are funny, but leaps and bounds more important than that is Luigi Mangione first and foremost is in danger.
while he is innocent until proven guilty in the court of law, far too many people have jumped on the idea of him being the shooter because it’s funny. however. there are a few key things i personally need to point out.
the NYPD fucking sucks. no bones about it. they are a legitimately bad police force. they are deeply corrupt and losing public value.
they allegedly found him with the gun and a full manifesto on his person just sitting in a mcdonalds. why in sweet fuck would anybody able to pull off that kind of murder and then evade the police for days just be carrying that around with him??
just. think critically for 30 seconds about any and all media surrounding this case that you read, and especially remember that the public opinion, while it isn’t necessarily supposed to be, is influential in court cases.
They remember the time before electric lights. They made their transition from people of the day to creatures of the night – but the change was not so stark, because the night was still bright with the glitter of a galaxy. When they looked up, it was not a single sun that hung in the sky but hundreds. Thousands. Pinpricks of light that travelled lifetimes to shine above the Earth.
Then the humans poured their artificial light into the atmosphere, and the stars were gone. Smothered by a blanket of orange-grey muck.
Vampires have to live where humans are, and humans mean light pollution. To find the stars again would require hunger. Starvation.
They choose to be well fed. They choose to grieve the night sky they used to know
For anyone in the US, Penzeys the infamously anti-Trump spice store is running a deal today and tomorrow (12-13th of December) where everything in the store is 50% off IN store and 25% off online with code: RESIST

For any of my IBS-having siblings, Penzey’s has an entire garlic- and onion-free section!
They’re a fantastic spice company, I swear like half my spice rack is from them
I almost cried when I saw thst. And their onion and garlic free blends are GOOD and there is a GOOD variety! I genuinely don’t feel like I’m missing out!
You can add garlic or onion to a blend but you can’t take it out.
And low salt! They don’t throw salt in everything!
