So I have read several people complaining that they can’t be expected to know the “unwritten rules” of fandom. So here’s what I wish people knew:
Fanfiction is fiction.
Fictional people are not real.
Fictional people do not have rights.
Fictional people cannot be abused.
Reading or writing about something does not mean the desire to do or support it in the real world.
If I find art upsetting/triggering/disgusting/outraging/unpleasant/squicky/distressing/offensive, it is on me not to read it, not the creators and hosts to remove it.
Curate your own experience. The back buttons exist for a reason.
If you don’t trust yourself to do that, get someone you trust to do it for you.
Fandom is an adult space. Adults create and own and host fandom spaces. If minors want to participate, then the onus is on them and their parents/guardians/trusted adults to ensure they participate appropriately, not on strange adults to stop being adults.
You often don’t know the assault status or mental health status or neurotype or race or nationality or religion or gender or sexuality or age of a creator or consumer, and they do not have to disclose to you to justify their fantasy.
AO3 is not a safe space. It is not intended to be a safe space. Proceed accordingly.
Just because you don’t like something or find it offensive doesn’t mean it is a “problem” that “has to be dealt with”.
Most characters in anime are not white.
There is no onus on you to reblog or share anything.
Everyone makes mistakes in fandom and is less than their best self sometimes.
Persistent pseudonyms encourage long term relationships.
Ship wars are stupid.
Someone else enjoying things does not impact on your own enjoyment of other things.
Tagging and warning is a courtesy, not a requirement. Assume any fic might contain untagged content.
Rating is an imprecise art, not a science.
Don’t hassle IP creators.
Most people who are in fandom are hoping to make connections based on a shared passion.
Trying to profit from transformative fanworks puts us all at risk.
No one is obligated to share your head canon or fanon.
Being kind rarely fails to pay off.
It is okay to block and remove people who make your experience unpleasant. You don’t have to placate them. (Learn from my mistakes).
Britpicking is a good thing.
You don’t have to justify why you like a canon/pairing/trope/kink. Sometimes navel gazing is fun, but you don’t have an obligation to explain yourself, especially to strangers. I share the overwhelming desire to refute an unfair accusation, but the people accusing you are rarely doing so in good faith, so you’re batting a losing wicket.
I’m not your Mum. (Well, okay, a very few of you can call me Mum or Mom, but if you are one of them you already know who you are ❤️)
If you aren’t mature enough to take responsibility for your online experiences, you aren’t mature enough to be in fandom spaces.
This is wonderfully informative. The one about tagging especially resonates with me. I have gotten some nasty comments about not tagging something in my fics that I didn’t even realize was an issue until someone pointed it out (in the worst way). It didn’t feel fair at the time, but they made me feel like it was my fault they were offended. But, like, books don’t come with warning tags. People spend good money on books that tell you almost nothing about their content. Yet it’s my fault you’re traumatized because I failed to tag one scene in a 100 chapter fic that you’re reading for free? … Yeah.
I do my best to tag things, but I may not always realize certain things are triggering for other people. A simple request is all it takes. I will gladly add a tag if you think it should be there, even if you decide you can’t read my fic because of the content.
But, at the end of the day, you read at your own risk. If you can’t deal/don’t like it, stop reading/don’t read it. Really. It won’t hurt my feelings, and you need to protect yourself.
I feel bad that some of yall assume Reddit is just for republican neckbeards. it is currently fucking plastered in leftist posts, making fun of trump and musk, calling out trump for basically admitting to election fraud and musk for the fucking salute, people literally openly saying they wish these assholes would die. Some subreddits with broad other purposes have been largely converted into leftist communities. Believing tumblr is the only existing bastion of leftists or whatever WILL make you bitter and miserable lol
What people think Reddit is: you sir have won the internets with your epic atheist logic!
What Reddit actually is:
I opened the fucking silly jojos bizarre adventure meme page and the first thing i saw was a meme straight up calling out musk as a fascist
Reddit yesterday was COVERED in posts discussing, asking the mods for, or mods announcing that all Twitter links are now banned from those subreddits. EXPLICITLY because of muskrat’s hitlersalute. Not just political subreddits, nearly every USA State subreddit was banning them, INCLUDING r/Texas (a bunch of non-English language and/or non-USA ones were doing it too!). Textile, video game franchise, gardening, people were organizing against him EVERYWHERE. With only a small spattering of explicitly rightwing subreddits crying conspiracy or deepstate.
Are you going to run into bigots and people unknowingly repeating bigoted things in unexpected places on Reddit? Absolutely, the same way you run into TERFs and people unknowingly repeating terf things on Tumblr constantly.
But while you can only block the idiots on tumblr, you can not only block but DOWNVOTE TO THE ABYSS idiots on Reddit. Make it VERY clear to them and everyone else that their brand of idiocy isn’t welcome in your community.
And if you don’t want to take my word for it, take the word of rightwing redditors who LOVE to complain about how biased reddit is toward the left.
Remember that time the Game of Thrones finale sucked so bad the mods turned the GoT subreddit into a LotR subreddit?
It kinda feels like that’s happening to Reddit on a site-wide societal level.
Am I really so bad? Am I really so frightening? You’ve talked to me. You’ve confided in me. Have I tried to hurt you? It isn’t me you’re afraid of. What you’re afraid of is the unknown.
