this is false information! egypt’s ministry of tourism and antiquities has denounced mr. beast’s blatant lie that he rented the pyramids. the egyptian government doesn’t allow that lmao. all mr. beast did was get a permit to film at giza outside of their normal operating hours, but he didn’t have a full run of the place and there were on-site archaeologists supervising the whole thing

Anytime some tumblr post consists of a screenshot of a tweet/article and an angry takedown with no cited sources, either do your own online research or just wait until the post comes around again with an addition from someone else who did it for you. I saw something in the news today that truly took my breath away. If you have been paying attention to U.S. politics over the past few days, you’ve most likely seen this woman:
This is Bishop Mariann Budde, and on Monday (Trump’s inauguration) she led an interfaith prayer for Trump and the incoming administration. During the service she asked him to have mercy for LGBTQ+ Americans and undocumented immigrants. This was badly received by the Trump administration (as expected).
After seeing headlines about this woman, I read something that I wanted to share. In 1998 a man named Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay. I’m not going to get into the details of his death on this post, but please be warned it is extremely triggering if you do choose to read more on your own. Matthew Shepard’s death caused a lot of change in the U.S. regarding how LGBTQ hate crimes are handled, and laws that were passed to protect LGBTQ+ people.
Now you’re probably wondering what Matthew Shepard has to do with an Episcopal bishop. For years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, his family had held onto his remains, too scared to lay him to rest in fear of his final resting place being vandalized. In 2018, Budde had his remains interred at the National Cathedral, which is also the place where the interfaith prayer for Trump and his administration took place. The impact of this really had an effect on me. Budde could have led a non confrontational prayer service, and chosen not to mention the harm that will come to the people Trump and his administration are going after. Instead she chose to call out hate and fear in front of some of the most powerful people on the planet, and at a place that has such a large historic meaning to the LGBTQ community.
In the next few years there will be many challenges in protecting free speech, standing up against hate, and protecting those in our communities. But I would like to believe that for every Donald Trump and Elon Musk, there are people like Marianne Budde. There are those of us who can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important for those of us who can to amplify our voices, even if it’s not the ‘popular’ thing to do.

I do actually care marginally about the guy in that reddit screenshot who voted for Trump and is now worried that he might lose his medicaid funding because I did not fucking stutter when I said healthcare is a human right but the people losing their internships and job offers to the hiring freeze are straight up hilarious.
My mom was telling me about this YouTube video she watched (I can’t remember the name, sorry) where the person shared a screenshot of some MAGA voter from Florida asking for help, because his wife had been hired for a nursing job with the VA in Texas, so they sold their house and were preparing to move. But they rescinded her job offer after Trump’s executive order. The post from the guy was basically like “I already contacted Senator Ted Cruz’s office, and they said they couldn’t do anything about this. Please help me get this story to President Trump, we love him! We voted for him 3 times! And we know this was just a mistake and he’d help us!”
Just……………..a part of me laughs, and another part of me thinks about how cult followers genuinely believe that the cult leader cares about them
This is the part about believing in universal human rights that can be a bit difficult: they’re universal, and should never be denied anyone, no matter who they are or what they have done.
You can be – you should be – furious with people who voted for Trump, for wilfully trying to sabotage those rights and make them conditional, a privilege for the “deserving”, a privilege they can deny the “wrong” kind of people.
And when the MAGA crowd are hit by the consequences of their actions, and denied basic human rights because it turns out their Great Leader doesn’t actually include his followers among the privileged, it’s tempting to say that they deserve to be denied those rights, because that’s what they wanted to do to others.
But if you do that, you don’t truly believe that those rights should be universal; you just have a different idea than the MAGA crowd about who should be included among the privileged.
You can still tell the MAGA who’s crying that the leopards ate their face that you’re angry with them for letting the face-eating leopards loose. But you shouldn’t be fine with their face being eaten.
The key here, IMO, is the distinction between your emotional reaction to hearing about it and how you consciously believe people should be treated.
Having a positive emotional reaction, enjoying the schadenfreude or whatever, doesn’t mean you’re bad and isn’t something you need to suppress. You just need to also be able to say, “but that shouldn’t happen, not to them, not to anyone.”
This is a good articulation! I’m going to reblog this addition because I think it might be helpful for some people who are sorting out their feelings to see this stated so plainly!

It’s funny but incredibly telling how entitled/ignorant/insensitive some of these people are… idk if it’s an education gap or purposeful ignorance.
The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they can’t be bothered to use it.
