I warned you.

About 15 years ago, I had a minor moment of Internet fame when I wrote a lengthy essay series on LiveJournal called “Christians in the Hand of an Angry God.” In it, I argued that right-wing evangelical “Christianity” was literally Satanic by scriptural standards, was literally the cult of anti-Christ that Jesus prophesied in Matthew 25:31-46, that they were literally worshiping a made-up guy with the same name to justify cruelty, just like Jesus predicted they would the week before the crucifixion.

And at least half of the people who read it and praised it called it excellent satire. They saw my point, thought I was onto something, but couldn’t take seriously that I literally meant what I literally said.

Screenshot of a Tweet from Ben Garrett, aka tompawnbadil. It shows a photo of Episcopal bishop Mariann Edgar Budde with the caption, "Do not commit the sin of empathy. This snake is God's enemy and yours too. She hates God and His people. You need to properly hate in response. She is not merely deceived but is a deceiver. Your eye shall not pity."ALT

“Do not commit the sin of empathy.”

i’m posting this article because it’s an interesting bit of history, and also because this is a playbook we’re seeing again. (some) leftists viewing fascists as “class allies” against social democracy, excusing antisemitism/misogyny/ableism as a step towards broader anti-capitalism. the idea of the “lumpenproletariat” as “useless poor” who fascists see as drains on society for essentially the same reasons, the fervent conviction that surely a working-class embrace of fascism will lead to a working-class embrace of communism. the total surprise when the fascists expel and kill the leftists once they seize power. the real red-brown alliance is what it looks like when spotted leopards eat faces.

as @stripedroseandsketchpads said, condoning bigotry as a “unifying factor” for the working class is a slippery slope to worse, because here you have a designated class of undesirables who it is acceptable to sacrifice for the cause. the canary in the coal mine for whether the state can commit industrialized mass murder and have everyone at home and abroad be basically fine with it was the euthanasia program/Aktion T4.
