I remember seeing so many people making their own interpretations of all their favorite characters and I was just in awe of all the creativity, it’s amazing! I just decided if everyone can do that, why can’t I make two different things I love, my culture and Sailor Moon, into one? It just felt like the perfect idea, especially in this political climate, to introduce people who are not familiar with Mexican culture to see how beautiful it is.

I used an old Folklorico dress as reference and looked up many “how to” videos but I also researched many dresses from various places in Mexico. I decided to not use as much fabric as a traditional dress even with that decision my skirt used over 12 yards of fabric! The hardest part was figuring out how to implement Usagi’s accessories, like what can stay the same or what needed to be redesigned in Folklorico style. I also had Sailor Moon playing in the background as I was working and I like to think that helped a lot as I worked.

Crying and puking, Google maps made the Gulf of Mexico say Gulf of America

oh yeah, I sent in a ticket to report the incorrect info (which anyone can do.)

Here in the UK it is still labelled as ‘Gulf of Mexico’ with ‘gulf of america’ in parenthesis underneath it.

The world at large does not recognise the ‘gulf of america.’

This is because the US has no legal right to change the Gulf’s name under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The naming conventions only extend 22KM from the shoreline. The rest is shared between the US, Mexico, and Cuba. This means only the land on America’s shores up to 22KM away from them can legally be called the ‘gulf of america’, they cannot rename the whole thing to the rest of the world and call it a day.

Google changing the name does not make it the truth, it does not make it law… people lie on the internet all the time, and yes that includes google themselves.

The US is truly incomprehensible

this is real

The sponsor, Earl Carter, is doing this to distract from the bill he sponsored immediately before this, H.R. 1160, which appears to classify all traveling doctors and “advanced care practitioners” as independent contractors (can’t be 100% sure as the text hasn’t been released yet, but it sounds like it’s gonna be exactly what it says on the tin).

If you’ve ever seen a post about doordash or lyft drivers being overworked and underpaid, this is basically the same thing but for doctors. Here’s an article about why independent contractors are bad for the worker, but here’s the cliff notes:

  • shit pay
  • no benefits
  • social isolation (coworkers changing frequently, so you don’t have time to make friends or even proper acquaintances)
  • not actually independent workers/still tied to a company

They dressed it up by adding this reasoning to the end of the title “to help alleviate physician shortages, including in underserved areas,” but it’s just political theater. Any physician would still need proper licensing, and there are already systems and travelling doctor companies in place designed to address underserved areas. The only difference is that the companies would be “required” (i.e. CEOs have been chomping at the bit to do this) to make all these doctors ICs instead of salaried employees.

All this to say, when you see some outrageous shit like this, look for the stuff that’s been released at the same time. That’s what they’re actually trying to get passed.
