Just out of college I worked as a bank teller. That job was soul crushing, but this isn’t about that.

I had a coworker about my age. Her husband worked in a manufacturing position. He claimed (but never confirmed) his coworkers were undocumented immigrants. He swore that they didn’t pay taxes and his wife believed him. I tried explaining to her that a few small companies might be able to get away with paying people under the table, but not a large manufacturing business like the one he worked at. I explained payroll taxes to her and how the company would not grossly underreport the number of employees because the first time they got audited they would be shut down, and this place was a major brand. She refused to believe me that those workers paid any taxes, up until one of them came to our branch to open an account. Then she saw his paystub and was really confused that he had taxes withheld, so I explained how IF this man was undocumented, the system had too much to worry about to chase down one guy cashing a check. She was floored by the revelation.

The “illegal immigrants are getting benefits and social security” is one of the oldest and most believed lies from the right.

The threat was loud and clear: Report your so-called “DEI” employees or else. What exactly “DEIA or similar ideologies” means is up in the air, but the message was out there. And so was the email address of the DEIA snitching hotline.

Fake emails quickly started to roll in. ‘I don’t care, fuck these McCarthyite bastards,” one BlueSky user said, with an screenshot attached of an email to the hotline where he ironically reported Donald Trump and JD Vance for being “put in their positions solely because of their race and/or gender despite the fact that they are wholly unqualified for their jobs and, in some cases, have criminal records.”

“Anyone have a script to fire off a billion e-mails an hour??” another user asked in the replies.

“Anyone can email anything of any size even if it crashes the site,” one X user noted.

The scope and effectiveness of this latest phase of Trump’s anti-DEI crusade remains to be seen.

FLOOD THIS 😀

MAKE IT UTTERLY UNUSABLE 😀

The email is DEIAtruth@opm.gov btw

“The problem is people don’t read classics anymore”

No I think the problem is people don’t read WIDELY. The ONLY ya and/or fantasy romance crowd is just as insufferable as the ONLY classics crowd or the ONLY litfic crowd or the ONLY nonfiction crowd and vice versa.

You gotta get some variety in there my guys

Upon this post I have seen people assert that nobody needs to read ‘books by dead white guys’ to be widely read with the context that they believe only dead white guys wrote classics,

People saying that because classics are in fact written not only by dead white guys you can get by on only reading classics,

And the classic (hah), people are just always going to be insufferable.

All of these have missed the point and are examples of why people should in fact read widely.

Read widely. Read beyond what you’ve been told are ‘the classics’. Read works by authors from other times and places. Read works by authors who are different from yourself.

dare i add: read a bad book once in a while too. flex your critique muscles a bit

Actually yes this last point is an extremely valid addition

Not only does it help you learn and hash out your critique skills, you might be surprised

You absolutely should read books written by dead white guys. Along with books written by other people.

There are people on this site currently praising a terrorist organization for murdering Jewish babies, or denying it happened. These posts have hundreds – thousands of notes.

I don’t want to see any fake sympathy and “punch a nazi” posts from people ignoring this.

the “context” shouldn’t matter- they’re BABIES

my sibling in christ you were the one that specified ONLY faux leather. you absolutely could’ve said “a leather jacket* / *faux or real depending on your preference” if this was you were trying to convey.

i don’t give a shit if you feel real leather is inherently unethical. people have been making and wearing leather for centuries. there are ways of sourcing leather that are humane to the animal the hide comes from and to the people making it. even when the hide and labor is not humane, an authentic leather jacket can last decades of wear and can be repaired to last longer.

i feel faux (aka plastic in 99% of cases bc plant based vegan leather is not widely accessible at least in the US) leather is inherently unethical. i feel that there is no way to humanely source or create. i feel that a plastic jacket that will last maybe 5 years at MOST and can’t be repaired and will end up in a landfill as soon as it’s worn out or damaged is much worse for literally everyone on earth.

it’s fine if you personally only wear faux/vegan leather. like you’ve said in other posts, there is very little truly and purely ethical consumption under capitalism and we are all doing our best with the resources we have. but you can’t make that distinction on a poll, worded as if your choice is the morally correct one, and then get mad when people comment “i would’ve chosen leather but you said faux leather only and i don’t enjoy faux leather, it’s made of plastic.” this is the ethical animal products loving website. like honestly just turn off the notifs on that post, block and delete whatever asks you get about it, and move the fuck on.

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.

bonus it ALSO fills that dopamine hit of in-person shopping. “oh I didn’t go in looking for this but hmm, I’m tempted… I can’t resist… oh ho ho I have made some irresponsible decisions at the library today [carrying my stack of ten random books]” and then it doesn’t even matter if you don’t like them because a) free b) you’re gonna give them back anyway

Librarian here! Please please please please PLEASE do this! We don’t have any way to know if you read them, and we don’t care! We’re happy to see those books go out because that helps our stats. And that affects how much money we can get.

So grab that silly paperback romance, and maybe this new YA fantasy, oh and check for the new movies too! And don’t forget to check Libby and hoopla for music and ebooks and e-audio.
