If you guys read beyond the headline, you would know that this instruction is to ensure the safety of the faculty, who can be detained if they do attempt to interfere. These instructions are fairly standard. Here is full guidance from the National Homelessness Law Center. It’s what I use at work. Much of the language is the same.
Some key points:
This advice is for your safety.
Spaces should be designated as public and non-public via signage. ICE requires a judicial warrant to enter non-public spaces.
Do not touch ICE officers or physically interfere with what they are doing. This is for your safety.
Treat the officer with respect. This is for your safety.
Notify a supervisor immediately of ICE presence.
Request to see a warrant.
Do not lie or mislead the officers. Do not destroy data or evidence.
Document everything and contact a lawyer as soon as possible.
What you can and should say:
Officer, please give me your name, badge number and provide me with any warrant you have with you today. And are you with the police or ICE?
I’m sorry, but this is private property, and we do not consent to your searching our facility without a warrant signed by a judge.
I’m sorry, but you are not authorized by a warrant to search [requested area] and it is our policy not to allow searches without proper warrants.
Since you do not have a warrant, it is our policy that you are not allowed to enter non-public areas of the facility.
Please do not search [areas not listed in the warrant] because they are not identified in the warrant.
