Hey, just so we’re clear, the reason the ban went 9-0 in the Supreme Court is because of serious espionage risks based on the Chinese government REQUIRING every company based there to provide ANY information gathered about users at ANY time with NO need for probable cause or search warrants. You can read it in the opinion.
You know how when you find out an American company just hands over shit to the cops without a warrant? And you get really pissed off because that’s bullshit and goes against the rule of law and the whole point of things like probable cause and search warrants and the fourth amendment?
Yeah, The Chinese government doesn’t fucking care about any of that ever for anyone. Even if you turn off the most egregious of the tik tok access requirements (think real hard about why an app needs the ability to see all your messages; that’s not something that you should have turn off ever because it should not exist), the Chinese government can still, at any point, get every single thing you have shared for no other reason than that they want to see it.
Because it’s a totalitarian government who doesn’t give a dry fart about your rights.
It’s not arbitrary to refuse to let a totalitarian government have easy access to millions of citizens’ information, and if you think I’m being a fear-mongering asshole, think about how RedNote is suddenly showing the Westerners all sorts of queer content when RedNote generally disallows it entirely because the Chinese government is notoriously anti-queer. It’s a fucking ploy by the government to convince Americans that the actual and real issues with them (the whole totalitarian thing with the human rights violations, rewriting of their history, and disappearing people) are all actually propaganda from their own government so they won’t trust their own government.
That is what Trump is backing. That is what the Chinese government is doing. That is what the “Oh, we’re back and isn’t it awful to stop free speech” card is taking part in. All of it is bad.
