I’m watching Sleeping Beauty with subtitles and hearing aids for the first time and HOLY SHIT.
THIS IS WHAT I WAS MISSING???
They’re actually singing words when Aurora gets her gifts?? Not just sounds??
The sparkly noises when the fairies use their wands…
Oh, I love the fairies.
(I was Fauna as a kid, vague and always dressed in green)
… the little goblin henchmen have lines. Like, I knew they did? But I couldn’t understand them.
They have creaky deep little voices and I love them. 🥺
FAUNA FOLDED IN THE EGGS AND THEY CRACKED WHEN SHE LEANT ON THEM THATS THE FUCKING JOKE
THE OWL HOOTS.
I… I didn’t know that Aurora sings more than Once Upon a Dream.
Like, she has a little soprano solo beforehand…? I just thought she wandered about.
(Also side note, Phillip is hilarious and adorable and I’m gonna cosplay him)
The fairies are using their magic again and I am experiencing childlike wonder.
I FORGOT ABOUT THE FUCKING MINSTREL
Holy shit, holy shit the spinning wheel scene and the music.
I’m actually jumping and gasping and the back cellars ECHO
There’s a song. With words. When they’re putting people to sleep.
My fucking heroes.
Now I know why I wanted to be a knight.
Sorry didn’t liveblog the dragon fight because I was a four year old boy again.
Ok, I’m crying a little bit.
We had this film on REPEAT when I was a little kid and when I think of “Disney of my childhood” it’s Sleeping Beauty followed by Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, and Emperor’s New Groove so I am stupidly delighted that not only does it stand the test of my 21 years of memory, but 65 years since it was made.
Even happier after years of seeing this film get bashed by the internet over Aurora having “no agency” and few lines. She’s so expressive! She knows what she wants! Phillip wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without the fairies! The majority of speaking lines in this film have to belong to women!
Genuinely haven’t been this glued to a story in ages.
