Ao3 is a non-profit organisation. If they have to start paying taxes, I have no idea what will happen.

URGENT: Tell your reps to vote NO on H.R. 9495!

“As written, it would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to revoke the tax-exempt status of "terrorist supporting organizations”—no evidence or explanation is required. Notably, status can be revoked even if the “support” is not intentional or connected to violence. If the tax-exempt organization couldn’t prove its case to the Treasury, it would have to go to court, essentially flipping the script on the current scheme.“

If HR9495 passes, charitable organizations that are involved in issues around women’s reproductive rights, serving immigrants and refugees, working on issues related to wars and victims of wars, and even issues around equity, could potentially be deemed as terrorists or domestic terrorists.

It’s already passed in the house. You need to call your senator and let them know your concerns and that you do not want this to go further.

For Americans, I need you to understand what this means in the hands of the incoming administration.

Does AO3 host stories written by Palestinian authors? Then it’s a terrorist organization. Done.

AO3 is at some risk, and as most of us in this corner of Tumblr are here for fandom, so that’s what first comes to mind. But this bill, if made law, would be used to destroy nonprofits like the ACLU, GLAAD, the World Wildlife Fund – the list goes on.

US Americans, contact your senators. Even if you know they’re going to vote No, contact them anyway and THANK THEM.
